Match Preview: Cheltenham Town (H)

26 April 2024

The 2023/24 League One campaign comes to an end as Stevenage welcome Cheltenham Town to The Lamex Stadium…

Stevenage have enjoyed a positive return to League One, following last season’s promotion from League Two, and they now prepare for their final battle before the summer break.

Once again, Alex Revell takes temporary charge of the side as they look to end a fantastic season on a high note.

A ninth-place finish has been confirmed for Stevenage, but their opponents, Cheltenham Town, have it all to play for as they battle for League One safety. Kick-off is at the earlier time of 12:30pm.

The Opposition

Cheltenham’s League One season goes down to the wire this Saturday, as their survival in the third tier is on the line. They currently sit 21st in the league, two points behind Burton Albion, and three points behind Cambridge United.

Anything other than a win sees the Robins suffer relegation to League Two this Saturday, so they will be arriving at The Lamex full of hunger. They have won two out of their last three games as they continue their fight for safety.

On Tuesday evening, Cheltenham hosted Peterborough United at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium and earned a 2-0 victory to keep them in the division, with Joe Nuttall and Matt Taylor grabbing the goals.

Liam Sercombe is the Robins’ top scorer this season, with 11 goals to his name from midfield. Stevenage supporters will be very familiar with Sercombe’s teammate, Tom Pett who made nearly 200 total appearances for Boro over several campaigns.

The Manager

Darrell Clarke took over as Cheltenham manager in September and has since had a tough task on his hands in keeping the club in League One. He is a man with plenty experience at this level though, having previously taken charge of Port Vale, Walsall and Bristol Rovers.

The Officials

Lee Swabey has been appointed as Match Referee for Saturday’s clash, with Hugh Gilroy and David Harrison as his Assistants, and Jason Richardson as Fourth Official. Swabey has dished out 123 yellow cards and five reds in 26 games this season.
