INTERVIEW: Conlon on signing new deal & getting back to fitness

26 April 2017

Speaking after signing a new and improved deal, Tom Conlon says he can’t wait to return to action and repay the faith shown by the club after missing most of the season with injury.

Conlon initially joined Stevenage on loan as an 18 year old in September 2014 before becoming a permanent signing in January 2015. The midfielder has made over 50 appearances for the club and says his best is yet to come.

“I am delighted. Obviously this season hasn’t gone as I would have liked but the club have shown a lot of belief in me and I want to repay that by signing this contract and staying with Stevenage.

“I have been here a few years now and really enjoyed my time but I know I have a lot more to show and can’t want to do so.”

After making a bright start to the campaign, it has been a frustrating season for Conlon after going down with a cruciate ligament injury in mid-August.

“It has been tough. Being out for eight months is hard for any player but I feel as though I have dealt with it the best I can. I have got what I can out of it, I have stayed positive, worked in the gym and it is finally coming to an end.

“I have been eased back into training and will hopefully be back with the lads fully next week. It has been brilliant being back out there again.

“The club have been really, really good to me. I saw the gaffer was saying in the press that they would look after me and it is easy to say that but for him to follow it through is obviously massive for me.

“It is a nice feeling and can’t thank the club and management enough. Being wanted does a lot for me as a player so I am looking forward to justifying their decision.”

Finally, it has been a terrific season for the club going into the final few weeks of the season and Conlon says it is the sort of team he would love to play in.

“They have been fantastic. I have watched most games this season, especially at home but I have been away a few times too and the lads have done brilliantly well.

“I can’t wait to get back fit again and fight for my place in the team. The way we have been playing, it looks a lot of fun to be a part of.”
