Speaking ahead of Saturday’s home game against Doncaster Rovers, Darren Sarll says the new contract for top goal scorer Matt Godden represents a coup for the football club.
Godden has five goals in his seven games and Sarll believes the forward line at the club is in good shape.
“It is a real steal for the club; I think we have all appreciated what Matthew has brought to our football club in the last four or five months. He has just got that ambition to be better all the time so it is a terrific coup for the club.
“Very few times in my tenure working at the football club - in whatever department - have we had such a dominant centre forward like Matt.
“Steve Morison might very well be the last one that we have had, but we are very fortunate now we have got Matthew and obviously Ben has come into a real vein of form.
“The other boys that are supporting those two at the moment have got real talent, so we are in a good place in that department.”
Boro go into tomorrow’s match on the back of three wins and a draw in the last four league games, much to the delight of the manager.
“They have been very good. It is a culmination of a lot of work all the way back to June or July. We have seen it come to fruition of late in terms of results and performances but I have really enjoyed the resilience, the organisation and the work ethic that has always been there.
“I actually think we have passed the ball better than in recent displays but every team has got to find its winning mechanic and I think this group of players are starting to find that. It has been a reprieve and we have obviously made some good strides up the table.”
With two games in hand coming up this week, the players and management team know that positive results will have a big impact as to where we will be placed heading into the Christmas schedule.
“For once, for the first time since I have been manager we are very much looking towards the top end, rather than checking our shoulders which is a pressure in itself, but obviously a more exciting pressure.
“Very seldomly will the table just sit still and wait for one club to win, lose or draw.
“We have always wanted to be a forward thinking, promotion thinking club and we have got the opportunity to think that way.
“It is an opportunity the players have worked very hard to not miss and they will certainly be doing their best the next two games, that is for sure.”
