Although in fantastic form with four wins and a draw in our last five games, Darren Sarll is eager to forget about the past and concentrate on what’s ahead.
A strong February has pushed us up the table and into play-off contention but Sarll says it is important to guard against looking too far into the future.
“Play-offs to me are irrelevant at the moment because if we don’t get Saturday right and we don’t get our performance levels and focus right for Crewe away, then play-offs might be somewhere in the distance.
“Let’s just make sure we win the next game, and the next game, and the next game. I know it is boring and supporters want me to say we are going to be fourth in three months but human nature just doesn’t work like that, it is always ready to give you a swift kick up the backside.
“The key to whether we are a top seven side or not will be form and performances of the players. The focus and the determination of the players.”
And Sarll says that his players have done him proud in recent weeks.
“What has been nice over the last five games is the form of the players has been really, really terrific.
“Wilkinson has had his best spell, Jones is doing less than ever, Lee has found himself at the top of performance levels. Connor Ogilvie has come in and done terrific, Tom Pett is a new man, Steve Schumacher is scoring goals, Jobi McAnuff is a new signing, Matty Godden is now fourth top scorer in League Two and Josh McQuoid has come in and been absolutely brilliant.
“That has been the key to the five games.
“But that period is behind us. We need to keep performing and winning, especially when we have done so well, it means we can grit our teeth onto something and hold on for dear life.
“I think that is really important that we look at what is ahead rather than wait for a Hartlepool and be reactive off that. That is the test for us now.
“Every game is huge. There is not a break. With everything so compact and so tight, you can’t have a break.
“Complacency is a disease in a football club and trying to diagnose those who are becoming complacent, bordering on that, teetering on that is so important for me and the staff to be able to gauge and make a decision on.”
