Darren Sarll says that despite a dip in form over the past few games, he has been generally pleased with the performance levels of his players.
After coming unstuck at Plymouth last weekend, Sarll believes the players are still on track as they prepare for a long trip to Hartlepool.
“We have been disappointed with the results of late. I think probably in the last 10, 12 games, Colchester was a disappointing performance but overall I am pleased with the performances of the players.
“That gives me an indication that they are still running hard for each other and getting better as a group.
“They are a good group of players like I have said all along and they are trying very, very hard.
“Yes we are making mistakes and yes, we have weaknesses but which team hasn’t? Whilst they continue to have an excellent attitude and very open mind, we will persevere.”
Sarll has long maintained that he hopes to bring attractive football to Stevenage under his tenure and as one of the highest scorers in the division, evidence is already stacking up to show he is on the right track.
Conversely though the manager knows there is still work to do in keeping goals out at the other end.
“I want to be offensively minded, enjoyable to watch and I think we are doing that but you need a nice balance.
"There can’t be many teams that went to Plymouth and had 20 attempts on goal?
“That just shows the potential of the group of players we have got. Potential can only be realised over the medium and long term, it doesn’t get realised from week-to-week.
“To get the balance in the side is obviously a big topic of discussion for us this week.”
It has been a busy week at Victoria Park as Dave Jones was appointed manager after the dismissal of Craig Hignett.
Caretaker Sam Collins will be taking charge on Saturday as Jones watches from the stands and Sarll is expecting a response from the team.
“We know it is a group of players that will be highly desperate to play well for Sam and do justice to the new manager coming in the following Monday.
“That itself gives inspiration and motivation. We know we are going to have to be well on our guard for the type of environment that will be created because of the new manager coming in.
“If we prepare properly and do what we need to do, we will be more than okay.
“We just have to make sure we do our job.”
