SARLL: WE HAVE JUST GOT TO KEEP IT GOING

19 February 2017

Darren Sarll was satisfied with a point at Exeter as his side fought hard for a share of the spoils against one of the in-form teams in the division.

Although the manager agreed a draw was a fair result, he told us that Exeter’s goalscorer confessed to a handball for their goal.

“The player admitted it straight after the game to me, apologising actually which I thought was a touch of class from Reuben Reid.

“He hasn’t made a mistake, he has done his job. He is a goal scorer and he has got to score goals.

“If the referee is not in the correct position to see a handball three yards from goal, it is not Reuben’s fault; it is the referee’s fault.”

Sarll was particularly pleased with the manner of the first half performance, capped off by a wonderful solo goal by Jobi McAnuff.

But the response to Exeter’s rally in the second half also encouraged the boss.

“We saw Exeter’s determination second half. I thought we really got ourselves into a good position first half. We played terrifically well, really brave and really courageous with the football. Like I said, my only disappointment is second half we didn’t continue for longer spells.

“We were strong, we were resilient and we tried our absolute hardest to make sure we at least came away with a point. In that sense, in terms of the growth of the football team, there was definite growth today.”

The draw moves us up the table a spot and now only a point away from the final play-off spot.

With 14 games to go in the season, Sarll challenges the players to stay in contention.

“We are a team at the moment in really good form. We are unbeaten in five and look, at the moment we have got something there to really grit our teeth onto, hold onto dear life and continue to keep churning out good points.

“We have just got to keep it going. We have to find our legs again next after a tough spell and we have to try and go to Crewe with an invigoration to take our journey further.”
