SARLL: WE SHOULD HAVE GOT SOMETHING FROM THE GAME

14 January 2017

Darren Sarll was left frustrated to leave Home Park with a defeat after believing his side did enough to earn a positive result.

A combination of poor defending at times and wasteful finishing meant Plymouth came away with the 4-2 victory.

“Nine times out of ten I think we would have scored four goals quite comfortably. We are obviously very disappointed that we weren’t able to take the opportunities that presented themselves.

“I think we more than deserved a point for our second half attacking display.”

After taking a 1-0 lead a couple of minutes into the game, Stevenage struggled for much of the second half until Plymouth turned the game around and took the lead.

Boro responded well though and made it all square before the break.

“It gave us a little head start but what transpired after that were two goals that were very much avoidable. It took us going down 2-1 to start playing again and passing the ball.

“To come in at 2-2 I thought was deserved because of the way we reacted to going down to 2-1. We showed a lot of resolve, a lot of resilience, we bounced back and we passed the ball well.

“Tom Pett managed to find possession a little bit higher up the pitch and so did Ben. When they get dribbling they provoke errors and I think it was one of them that got the trip for the free-kick.”

That free-kick resulted in Steven Schumacher finding the net with his third goal of the season and despite having a catalogue of chances in the second period, Boro couldn’t find a route to goal.

“The short term facts are that we do not take our chances to stockpile points.

“The long term impression we are making is that our young players are doing so well in their performances and we are really pleased with them. We want to be a club that does this and they are taking the game to senior players.

“I thought Ben and Tom manoeuvred and manipulated the ball brilliantly in front of their back four second half. I thought Matty Godden was terrific when we had to make a little tactical change. Rowan is ever improving and we saw glimpses of Ryan Loft's aggression, tenacity and quality.

“We have had two open goals. We should have got something from the game.”
