Stevenage FC

Since promotion to the Football League in 2010, Stevenage are undefeated in 25 of their 29 home league games on a Tuesday, with many a valuable scalp taken under The Lamex Stadium floodlights.

Doncaster Rovers (22nd November), Cheltenham Town (14th February) and Leyton Orient (28th February) all visit in midweek fixtures this season, with Boro also facing trips on the road to Leyton Orient (16th August), Cheltenham (27th September) and Blackpool (14th March).

Arguably Stevenage’s most impressive Tuesday night result came with the 5-1 demolition of promotion hopefuls Sheffield Wednesday in September 2011. Craig Reid struck first after five minutes, firing home after Ronnie Henry’s shot was saved by Richard O’Donnell. John Mousinho doubled the advantage four minutes later and when Michael Bostwick found the back of the net from distance just past the 15 minute mark, it looked like the game was secured. Boro weren’t done yet, however, with Lawrie Wilson seeing an effort squirm in before half-time and Darius Charles twisting and turning inside the box before scoring a fifth on 66 minutes. Wednesday did grab a consolation through Gary Madine with 17 minutes remaining but then finished the game with 10 men after Jermaine Johnson saw red late on.

With Darren Sarll and Mark Roberts in caretaker charge, Stevenage made it three games unbeaten since the departure to Preston of Graham Westley with a 4-2 win over MK Dons. Jay O’Shea put the Dons ahead with an early shot but another goal from distance by Michael Bostwick levelled matters on 24 minutes. The visitors were reduced to 10 men on 64 minutes when Mathias Doumbe received a second yellow, with Scott Laird nodding home the resulting free-kick. Darius Charles made it 3-1 three minutes later and a Tom Flanagan header brought it back to 3-2 with five minutes remaining. However Gary MacKenzie’s 87th minute own-goal made the game safe in front of 3,345 spectators.

Stevenage continued their excellent League 1 form with a 2-1 win over Portsmouth, thanks to a Filipe Morais double. The Portugese winger headed in Lucas Akins’ cross on 13 minutes but Jon Harley equalised five minutes after the break with a long range strike. However Morais grabbed his second and the points were safe when his cross missed everyone and found the back of the net.

Stevenage stretched their unbeaten run to five and further strengthened their case for a playoff spot with a late win over Plymouth last season. Bobby Reid volleyed against Chris Day’s bar as the Pilgrims went close but it was sub Bruno Andrade who did the damage, latching onto Tom Pett’s past and turning the visiting defence inside out before firing home low.
