After today’s 2-2 draw at Accrington, manager Graham Westley admitted that attacking play outshone defensive play on the day at the Crown Ground.
He told us, “Our front six was better than their back six, the two goals we scored show that. I think their front three was better than our back four, which is a disappointment because the numerical advantage of four defenders against a front three ought to have given us a chance to do better than we did defensively. That’s the story of the game.”
Stevenage were handed a numerical advantage after just a couple of minutes thanks to Nicky Hunt’s early dismissal but GW dismissed the notion that it would be a straightforward game from that point onwards.
“Listen, 10 men is a myth, we all know that,” he continued. “It takes one player to put the ball in the net and we know that teams with 10 men can often react by producing steely determined and gritty performances.
“It was an afternoon where they played very well with 10 men. They worked very, very hard, it was a difficult pitch to be constructive on, they put two banks of four to make things difficult, they had pace and they had quality on the counter-attack which made them a difficult proposition.
“We struggled and we persevered and showed determination and at least we showed enough craft in the end to get the equaliser and win a point which is better than winning nothing.”
