The gaffer on facing Wycombe at the weekend...
GW praised Wycombe boss, Gareth Ainsworth ahead of our meeting on Saturday as Boro look to avenge the 3-1 loss at the Lamex earlier this season.
“Gareth has done an unbelievable job, he was very close to taking Wycombe out of the league last year and that obviously gave him a shot in the arm and he has produced an outstanding season. He has had very limited resources and he has been fortunate to keep his best players on the pitch for a large part of the season.
“He has done a brilliant job in putting a core together, getting a team around that core and they are where they are for a reason.”
For much of this season, Boro’s away form has been one of the worst in the league but since beating Dagenham on Boxing Day there has been a big turnaround. Our recent away form in the joint-second best in the league, with 10 points won out of 18 available.
“Lads who never played in front of bigger crowds before are now used to playing in front of bigger crowds. Lads who weren't used to the organisation and the change in mentality that you need to adopt to be effective away from home, they are starting to learn that. So as a team have we improved away from home? I would hope so.
“History, you can learn something from it but it is what you do next which is what matters in football."
Conversely, Wycombe’s home form is certainly not as impregnable as their away form and in recent weeks their pitch has begun to suffer. GW believes the conditions could give us the edge.
“It is up to us now, we have got 14 games to push ourselves on as far as we can do. We are looking forward to Saturday, it’s a very, very sticky pitch. We are used to training on sticky pitches; we are used to playing on a sticky pitch. It is almost home from home from our point of view, knowing how to go about your work on a difficult surface is something that we have had to become effective at, so that is good news for us.
“We are looking to do what we did last weekend; we turned around a situation against Southend - they had beaten us at their place and looked very, very good and we managed to get a result against them at ours. We have got to do the same again but away from home this time around where a very, very good side beat us at ours and we have got to go there and win the three points.
"It is going to be a tough challenge but we are looking forward to it.”
