The gaffer gives us the latest on injuries to Dean Parrett and Roarie Deacon, and looks ahead to Coventry on Wednesday...
Stevenage were dealt a double blow on Saturday as the late collapse against MK Dons was twinned with a serious injury to Dean Parrett that looks like it might keep him out for the rest of the season.
Parrett was beginning to show his best form of the season and it was his strike that gave Boro the lead on Saturday. Halfway through the second half though the young midfielder hit the deck and it was apparent early on that it was serious. The injury comes a week after another, Roarie Deacon, was taken off against Preston, who was just beginning to break into the first team.
GW admitted that it's highly unlikely we'll see either of them don the red and white of Stevenage again this season.
He told us, “Both he and Roarie I think are probably doubts to play again this season. They’re two young players who have developed well, they’ve started to show some form, both earning their way into the side and when you’ve got young players who are developing and starting to mature, starting to grow, the last thing you want really is to lose them. But it is what it is. It looks like we’ve lost them for the season so we’ll have to plan to play without them now.”
Moving on to facing Coventry on Wednesday, the gaffer told us how he's seen them play a lot this season:
“They’re a decent outfit, because of their Sunday situation I’ve watched a lot of their games this season and they’ve got some good players. They’ve got an intriguing system that they play and they cause sides a lot of problems. It’s important that you recognise the way that they play and that you can deal with that, hopefully we’ll be in good shape to do that – we’ve done a lot of work on that this morning.
“And the other way round we’ve got to be able to exploit the weaknesses in their system that have proved to be their undoing, especially in recent times. Clarke was a big player for them and since they lost him their form has dipped and you can understand why because he was influential. When the likes of Wolves come in and take your biggest player away from you, they’re not doing it for no reason, and he was definitely a big factor. We know that they’ve got that difficulty but they play the game that people would say is the right way. They really want to be expansive and work the football and they’re a tough nut to crack.”
