GW PRAISES HIS SIDE'S GOOD RESPONSE AT WYCOMBE

28 February 2015

Manager pleased with response in 2-2 draw after disappointing start at Adams Park

After today’s dramatic 2-2 draw at Wycombe, manager Graham Westley praised his Stevenage side for their response after falling behind in the opening 10 minutes.

He told Boro Player, “Certainly early on we let the game get away from us. We didn’t show enough workrate, enough desire, enough togetherness or spirit and it was disappointing. There was no problem they posed us that we hadn’t talked about or thought about. The game did get away, they got the lead and let’s face facts it could have been worse than it was. We earned our way back in, step by step and it was a great equaliser –a brilliant cross from Whelps, great header from Pett and then to go ahead just before half time was terrific.

"We came out second half, determined to go and get the next goal, get our next goal, but we weren’t able to do that. They got a little bit of backing from the fans, the crowd got up, the momentum got up and they kept coming forward and kept coming at us.

"If we’re honest the equaliser was always coming, we tried what we could to prevent it. The sending-off didn’t help us, down to 10 men, back at 2-2, it was always going to take a resilient and determined display and I thought in the last 20 minutes they were terrific. We dug in when we had to, we moved forward when we could and we earned some great chances, especially late on. We earned the penalty and could very easily have won the game. It’s disappointing not to after a really good response."
