GW: THE SQUAD HAVE BATTLED BACK AGAINST THE ODDS

26 March 2015

The gaffer looks ahead to Monday night's game at Burton...

Ahead of facing Burton on Monday, GW says that the players deserve a lot of credit for pushing the club into the promotion picture at this late stage of the season.

“The boys have done amazingly well especially when you consider the issues that we have faced. We are not the biggest squad, we have not got the biggest budget and we have had a ridiculous injury situation. You couldn’t make it up really, if you look at the amount of lads who have come here and we haven’t got games out of.

“You add it all up, you think this squad has faced a lot but they have battled back – they have done things against the odds, they have pushed themselves forward and put the club in a great position all things considered.”

With the game being a televised Monday night fixture, the gaffer says the extra couple of days will come in handy.

“It is nice for us, it gives you that extra couple of days of preparation, a chance to get one or two knocks hopefully back. We have got a few lads who are struggling a bit after the game last time out and it will be nice to see them back on the training ground over the course of the weekend, which we are hopeful they will be.

“It gives us a little bit of extra time to recuperate and recover and from our point of view, a little bit of an advantage we think.”

On paper the game will be one of the toughest tests of the season, Burton are five points clear at the top of the league and have an imperious home record. GW responded to whether he is surprised to see them going so well.

“Absolutely not surprised, when you look at the players they have got. Lads like Phil Edwards, Moose, Shane Cansdell-Sherriff. Beavon – a top quality goalscorer at this level and real workmen like performer, and then Lucas who we had last year. A lot of lads who I am familiar with, good quality players, good quality people.

“They are there for a reason, they deserve to be there. They have got a good squad together and they have been very consistent in what they are doing. We know what they are all about.”

Since Christmas, results on the road have improved dramatically and although Monday night will be a difficult game, GW knows it is certainly winnable.

“We have been playing a lot better away from home. I think it is two defeats in nine away from home so much better performances and much better approach to games. It is a tough test but you have got to come through tough tests. In the end, it is Burton away, not Manchester United.”
