GW: THERE IS NOTHING LIKE THIS STAGE OF THE SEASON

16 April 2015

The gaffer looks ahead to Accrington and speaks about the determination of the squad...

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s trip to Accrington, GW says that the opposition are not to be underestimated.

“It is a trip that we know well, it is a tough place to go. They are in difficult to beat form - one win, four draws and just the one defeat in six.

"I saw Newport win up there that Friday night and they were backs-against-the-wall for a lot of the 90 minutes so even the win that was got against them was not easily gained.

“They are a tough proposition, they have got some decent players, they play football out from the back and we know we have got a lot hard work to do to come back with a point or three.”

Boro go to Accrington with a six point advantage over 8th place and are in control of their own destiny in terms of making the play-offs.

GW says the good run of form that has propelled Boro into such a position is testament to the hard work from the squad.

“We have had seven wins in fourteen, six draws and that is the right side of the line in terms of winning more than we are doing anything else.

“The players are working very, very hard. That is the key. They are trying to get better, they are hungry to improve, they are becoming more together, they are learning more about each other and the systems they are required to develop. It is just a question of improvement, against the odds.

After grinding out wins in the last three games, Boro seem to have developed a physical and mental edge over their opponents and the gaffer says they are two of the most important parts to a successful team.

“Physical and mental aspects of sport are the ones in my book that you can’t afford, or you are daft if you leave them behind.

“However good you are as a technician, if your body won’t carry you and your mind is not strong enough to do what needs doing, or you lack the ambition or courage to do what needs doing, you haven’t got a chance.

“There is a determination, there is no question. If people want to try and get in the players way I am sure they are willing to be the ones that come first, not second in any challenge.”

Finally, GW spoke how much he relishes being in contention to end the season with honours.

“This is what it is all about, this is when the prizes are won and there is nothing like this stage of the season.

“The opportunity to go and achieve is what you start off in July for and when you get into the business end of the season it is down to those that can and those that can’t do the business. This is what it is all about for me.”
