GW: WE HAVE GOT A TERRIFIC SPIRIT

6 March 2015

The gaffer's thoughts ahead of Saturday's match against Newport...

GW says Boro must be wary of the threat Newport can pose on Saturday after their last two trips on the road, against difficult opposition, has seen the South Wales side pick up maximum points.

“They have lost three in six, but they have won two very big away games in that six. They won at Wycombe and they have won at Burton. We all know that whatever is going on within that football club, to go and get two wins at Wycombe and Burton has not proven to be easy so we are mindful of what they have got to offer.”

After a difficult start to the season, Boro have now put in a prolonged period of form since Christmas which has seen us pick up eight wins, three draws and three losses in the last 14 league games.

“We have got a lot of knocks but we have also got a terrific spirit that needs fuelling and we have got a sense that we could yet make something of our turnaround season. We just want to keep focused really on trying to put together the next performance.

“This group of lads want to bring their own ideas to the table, they want a sense of ownership and belonging and they want to get better.

“It is only when you are in that type of environment and working those kind of people that you give yourself a chance to achieve anything.

“Whatever their strengths, whatever their weaknesses, they just want to build on their skills and capabilities which is a terrific place to be.”

In the last two home games at the Lamex, Stevenage have scored late goals to win the games and GW says that it is a result of improving fitness levels within the squad.

“People were saying to me the other night, ‘It’s like watching one of your old sides, they seem to want to cover the ground again, they seem to want to work harder than the opposition and they seem able to work harder than the opposition.’

“They have put in a lot of hours and mileage out there to improve their physical abilities and when your physical abilities improve, your footballing abilities get a chance to come through.”
