HOLDING OUT FOR OKIMO

23 January 2015

Jerome Okimo is one of the quietest members of the Stevenage dressing room but his role at left-back has provided much needed balance to the team and his performances have started speaking volumes.

“Yeah I’m a man of few words; I prefer to do my talking on the pitch.”

A league title winner at Wealdstone last season, Okimo says the step up from non-league couldn’t have gone much better.

“I love it here, I'm enjoying it a lot. It’s my dream job, it’s what I’ve always wanted to do and I’m just trying to improve all the time.

“I didn’t expect (to play as much as he has done), I was hoping I would but I just tried to do my best and things have worked out well. At the start I was in-and-out and I had my injury but the last few months have been brilliant.”

When asked about how he thinks he’s done so far this season, although pleased, Okimo says he’s always looking to do better and the use of performance analysis has been massive.

“Personally I think there’s a lot I can do to improve and that’s what I’ll try to do, continue improving.

“I go over the film with Jase a lot, take a look at what I can get better and spend time studying to see how I’ve done.

“I’ve never gone over my performances before at all so it helps a lot.”

Speaking about his defensive partners, Okimo is pleased to have Whelpdale in front of him and Darius to his right.

“To be fair, Chris has helped me out a lot defensively and I feel secure with him in front of me. The same goes for Darius, he’s been a beast and his performances speak for themselves. You know he’s going to win all his battles, you feel safe with him around you.”

On facing Shrewsbury tomorrow afternoon, Okimo was full of confidence.

“I personally feel we can go there and beat them, the team’s got great spirit at the moment and everything’s coming together.”
