STEVENAGE 1 PETERBOROUGH 1

4 August 2012

Stevenage were on the back foot for much of the first half but after the break took the lead through Greg Tansey.

A late Lee Tomlin goal was enough to deny Boro victory at the Lamex Stadium against Championship side Peterborough United.

Stevenage were on the back foot for much of the first half but after the break took the lead through Greg Tansey.

With the game seemingly heading towards a first home victory in this pre-season campaign Darius Charles played a poor ball across the back line which was pounced on by Tomlin who slotted the ball into the bottom corner well.

In the grand scheme of things the draw was probably a fair result; but more important than that there were more signs of improvement from Gary Smith’s side who played some excellent passing football and continued to come together as a team.

The away side were dominating proceedings in the first half, midfielder Lee Tomlins almost broke the deadlock with twenty minutes on the clock but after making space in the box his shot was just wide of the top corner. They came even closer five minutes later, Bostwick sent a perfect ball into the box that found the head of Barnett, he met it well but Chris Day dove sublimely and his fingertips brushed it onto the post.

With thirteen minutes of the half to go it was Stevenage hitting the woodwork though, a deep corner from Freeman found Roberts at the back post – he expertly headed it back into the middle where Haber rose well but from close range his effort struck the bar and bounced out.

With the teams out for the second half it wasn’t long before Boyd had a chance; after being played into the box by a cutting through ball his shot towards the bottom corner was well equalled by Day. At the other end Morais began to show a little more of what he has to offer, first his shot was blocked well by a defender and next Bobby Olejinik equalled his on target effort.

Just before the hour mark, and with substitutes warming up on the touchline, Boro scored their first home goal of the pre-season campaign and Tansey was the man to net it. Morais again looked decent in the build-up as he pounced to force a mistake from right back Michael Richens; he approached the area and pulled it back nicely for the former Inverness man who connected well to send the ball into the back of the net.

Freeman wowed the supporters of both sides with an amazing dribble ten minutes later; literally leaving Richens on the floor before turning Shaun Birsley with equal ease he drilled a low ball into the box which was blasted over the bar by Akins on his debut.

Boro were punished with 83 minutes on the clock; Charles had possession at left back and attempted a ball across the back to Roberts. His pass was poor though, and Tomlin didn’t need asking twice – he stole in and it the ball into the bottom corner beyond the outstretched arms of a helpless Day.
