GRAHAM WESTLEY REFLECTS ON WYCOMBE DEFEAT

24 August 2014

Reflecting on the 3-1 home defeat to Wycombe Wanderers, manager Graham Westley told us that performances like Saturday's can sometimes happen when building a new team.

He told Boro Player, "None of us would have wanted to admit at the beginning that there were going to be difficult days like today because you hope you can get through unscathed when you’re putting a new team together, but I think the growth of any new squad is always going to have a bit of pain.

"There will be some performances you look at and say ‘it was ugly, it was horrible, we didn’t get it right’. We ended up, let’s face facts, playing some horrible route one football, we didn’t look like we had any sense of ambition with the football and we didn’t take any real responsibility for it. I think the players looked a little bit lost in the situation. I take ultimate responsibility for that because I couldn’t settle them down at half time and get them improving on what they were doing.

"But in the end the margins between defeat and victory are only ever very slight. If we’d defended two set plays a little bit better than we did we’d have gone into the half time interval 1-0 up, they would have had to probably chase the game and it probably would have been a different story."
