WESTLEY ON PLYMOUTH PERFORMANCE: "IT WAS A TERRIFIC AWAY DISPLAY"

20 August 2014

After Saturday's defeat at Southend manager Graham Westley was very pleased with the way his squad bounced back and responded at Plymouth, despite conceding a last gasp equaliser at Home Park.

He told Boro Player, "The players I thought were tremendous. It was a difficult result on Saturday to take and a difficult performance to take. I knew that along the way to building this new team there were going to be some difficult days and that was one of them, we didn’t turn up. Players’ motivation, our organisation and so many aspects of what we did weren’t on the button and that’s about me learning the lads, them learning each other and us learning to play the Stevenage way.

"But tonight I thought it was a terrific away display, it was a tough place to come after Saturday’s debacle and I thought the response from the team was first class. Most people around the ground would have said that the better side had won had we seen out those eight, nine, however many minutes there were at the end."

Connor Calcutt scored his first competitive goal for Stevenage to put the visitors 1-0 up on 54 minutes and GW was full of praise for both the build-up to the goal and the finish itself.

He continued, "In fairness we talked at half time about the fact those diagonal balls had caused them problems before. We felt that their back four was quite split and going into the game we’d identified that their back four didn’t really play as a unit and there were spaces between them. We played exactly the ball we’d talked about and worked on and it was great to see it delivered, great to see Whelp’s determination to get to the ball – why’s he won four promotions? Because he’s got that attitude and mentality. But take nothing away from Connor Calcutt because what a header that was, it was a proper centre forward’s goal."
