GW: WHOLE TEAM MUST TAKE RESPONSIBILITY

30 November 2013

Graham Westley reflected on this afternoon's defeat to Shrewsbury by telling Boro Player the team must take a collective accountability for their performance.

He stated, "Let’s face facts. There were so many areas of the park where we were short of problem solving, of appetite, of good habits, of tactical nous. There were so many areas where we were short that the whole team has to take responsibility."

Taking the second and third goals as examples, he continues, "Both were horrible passages of play. If you look at the second goal, live I counted four or five players who could’ve done something different to stop the goal happening. When you’re looking at four or five you’re actually looking at the team, because you’re saying the team’s mentality just isn’t strong enough.

"There wasn’t enough urgency, hunger, desire, everyone was leaving it to someone else. It’s not what I’m used to watching and not what I want to see going forward."

There were moments, however, particularly after the break which the gaffer can take heart from.

"I look back on the second half and thought there were some really good moments, " he said. "Jordan’s knock-down to Zoko, when I thought maybe we had half a shout for a penalty. I can remember one or two balls whistling across the face of the goal, Luke Freeman’s shot just creeping wide.

"I remember moments when I thought we’ve could’ve scored, should’ve scored. Unfortunately we didn’t sustain any consistent pressure."

"Luke Freeman’s right-footed cross at the end that escaped three of our men at the far post probably summed us up. We didn’t show the desire or the appetite to get on the end of that and we should’ve done."
