CHARLES EARNS BORO A POINT

1 September 2012

Boro continued their unbeaten start to the season with a draw at home to newly promoted Shrewsbury Town.

Gary Smith had defender Darius Charles to thank for the point as his equaliser, a top corner effort after cutting in from the wing, pegged back an early Paul Parry goal to share the spoils.

Stevenage went into the game after confirming the deadline day signings of Dani Lopez and Patrick Agyemang on permanent deals, as well as Oliver Risser on loan from Swindon Town.

None of those players made it into the starting line-up for the tie at the Lamex Stadium; Agyemang, who had spent the second half of last season on loan with the club, did find his way onto the bench whilst Robbie Rogers, on loan from Leeds United, was handed his first start.

With the Capital One Cup game against Premier League side Southampton behind them focus returned to the league campaign; however just five minutes into the tie, and with their first attack to deal with, Boro would be chasing the game.

Marvin Morgan won his side a free kick and Matt Richards drilled it low into the box, Chris Day got down well but, no pun intended, parried the effort to Parry who hit it into the back of the net.

The away side were providing much of the attacking intent but Mark Roberts would have rightly felt unlucky twenty minutes in when his effort crashed against the woodwork.

It would be a defender who would draw things level before the break though and Charles, with a flash of brilliance, had his name on the score sheet. Characteristically high up the field he curled a beautiful shot into the far corner of the net and left Chris Weale with now chance.

The second half was a more even affair and the sides seemed to cancel each other out for large parts of it. In the end there were no more goals and a point apiece was the outcome.

Stevenage (4-2-3-1): Day; Gray, Roberts, Ashton, Charles; Grant, Dunne; Akins, Tansey (Morais 57), Freeman (Shroot 77); Rogers (Agyemang 60)

Unused Subs: Arnold, Thalassitis, Comminges, N’Gala
