TEDDY: A REWARDING POINT

11 October 2015

Stevenage FC manager, Teddy Sheringham praised his players after they twice came back from behind at Exeter in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

It was a nightmare start as Boro faced a 2-0 deficit after only 15 minutes and the gaffer admitted the need to tighten up defensively.

“I think it was a good performance apart from perhaps two or three lapses in concentration. It was a sloppy start after what? One, two, three minutes to go behind, it was far too easy.

“Apart from that, we got into the game early on, passed it nicely and opened them up a little bit but didn’t take our chances. The second one was just a killer blow that was very harsh I felt but when you don’t start good enough, that is what happens.

“If you give people an inch, they will take a little bit more and we gave ourselves a mountain to climb.”

Despite the early events Boro didn’t get disheartened and kept probing, firmly with the initiative and before half-time, we were all square.

“To come back from 2-0 and to get back to 2-2 was great from my team. I was very pleased to end up getting a result and getting a point out of that I think is rewarding. You don’t always get what you deserve but I felt we did deserve something today.”

Armand Gnanduillet made his debut for the club after signing on loan from Chesterfield and Teddy was pleased with his impact.

“I thought he was very good. He gave us a focal point to work off, he caused them problems as well and I thought he did very well. Asa debut, I was very pleased.”

The second half was a more measured affair and after going behind from a stunning David Wheeler goal, it was Whelpdale that popped up in injury time with a stunning volley to secure the point and make the score 3-3.

Teddy says that although he is delighted to have won the point and end the teams losing run, there is a long way to go.

“Of course. We are not at the end of the tunnel by any means but it is great to get a point and to stop that rot.

“My team dug deep, kept going, kept trying and I thought we deserved the goal that we got at the end.”
