TEDDY ON MANSFIELD DEFEAT: "NOT GETTING THE RUB OF THE GREEN"

9 January 2016

Reflecting on this afternoon's 2-1 defeat at Mansfield Town, Stevenage manager Teddy Sheringham conceded it was perhaps the proverbial game of two halves as Boro impressed in the first half before the Stags enjoyed the best of the second half.

"We had the better of the first half so it was disappointing to go in a goal down when you are on the front foot and feeling good about the way things are going. We're creating chances, keeping the ball, doing good things out on the football pitch so it was very disappointing."

Michael Tonge struck the post as Boro impressed early on before the half's main talking point came when then visitors were denied what looked a clear penalty for handball, when Charlie Lee's volley was blocked inside the box.

Asked if it was a similar situation to last week's controversial penalty given against Fraser Franks, Teddy told us, "I don't think it was anything like last week's penalty. Last week Fraser's hands were down by his side and we get the penalty given against us. This one is fully charged, it's up above his head, fully seen by everyone else in the ground that it's hit his hand.

"From my point of view if you're giving it last week it's a stonewall penalty, without a doubt. It probably changes the whole vibe of the game and makes us feel a little more comfortable about what we're doing. We're not getting the rub of the green at the moment.

"We tried with a bit of gusto to get back into the game. They looked quite dangerous on the break and we tried to push forward. The second goal was sloppy from our point of view and put us in an uphill battle for the rest of the game."
