Teddy Sheringham has reflected on the weeks transfer dealings in the lead up to Saturday’s game at York City.
It has been a busy window for the club with a number of notable ins and outs, none more so than the departure of centre-back pairing Mark Hughes and Jamie McCombe.
Teddy says there were differing reasons for their exits.
“It hasn’t been easy for Hughsey since coming in, what with me having my first managerial job. I don’t think our organisation was as good as what it could have been and I think the defenders suffered from that and probably Hughsey did.
“To be fair to him he was the best professional throughout this six months here. Even when he was having a tough time he was still there to help others and I really admire that.
“Jamie had been playing for seven games, was dropped for one game and then came in on Monday morning and told me he wanted to leave, wasn’t happy.
“He didn’t want to fight to get back in so it was best that he leaves and that is what happened.”
With Fraser Franks, Luke Wilkinson and a now fit again Dean Wells all vying for a starting berth in the centre of defence, it is not as if Teddy is lacking for quality centre-halves at the club.
The boss says his job is to use the window to make the team better.
“Hopefully you improve, hopefully you learn about players, hopefully you bring players in, take players out and you want to make the team better.
“As I have said many times on a Friday morning, I am still learning. Learning how to get the best out of certain players, putting players with certain players to make them respond, to make other players better around them.
“It is all part of it - it is not just about picking one particular person, it is will he gel with others? That is my job to piece it all together and make us a better team.”
Saturday’s opponents, York City are currently bottom of the Football League but the gaffer has warned against any complacency from his players and says he would like to see an improvement from last week's performance.
“We have had some bad results against the likes of Yeovil and Dagenham when we have played them when they are down at the bottom.
“This is a tricky game for us, as I have said – everyone will be beating everyone throughout the season. Even now when it looks like the top 3, 4, 5 will run away with it, that isn’t going to happen in this division.
“It only takes teams giving a little bit more effort than the teams at the top and they overturn the teams at the top.
“We can’t take this easily because we are four places above the team that we are playing, no way. We are not good enough to take this game easy, we have to be at full throttle, making sure we are very focused otherwise we will get turned over.
“I am trying to make that quite clear to my players. We had a very resilient performance last week and I would like more of that and better for this week.”
