The new boss on his first days in charge of the players...
Four days into pre-season training, Teddy Sheringham spoke to the media about how things are going so far, the difficulties of management and where he thinks the squad needs strengthening ahead of the new season.
Teddy says that despite needing a few players to boost the squad, he is happy with what he has seen of the lads already.
“We still have a very small squad, we will be looking to bring in two or three more players at least.
“I like what I have got now, the base of what we have looks really good. We have not done an awful lot of team shape or anything like that but what I like is the togetherness of the squad.
“It is a good group of players, nice atmosphere and good characters around so if anyone comes in now they are going to have to be real good to make our team better.”
When asked about the difficulties he has faced upon taking the job on, aside from unusual tasks such as designing the new changing rooms, the boss said dealing with players agents can be frustrating.
“I think everyone complains about the agents don’t they? It is tough. Backwards and forwards, backwards and forwards.
“I have always been a quite straight forward type of guy. If I want something I go and get it, if I can’t afford it, I don’t have it.
“I was on the phone to one particular agent for a solid four weeks and then lost the player right at the end. Bit disappointing after all the work we had done on it, but it happens.”
Boro are yet to go into the loan market but Teddy has said that although he plans to, he would like the majority of the players here on permanent deals.
“I would like to have the main part of our team knowing that they will be here for the next two years, hopefully.
“Having said that we probably will need to go into that market at some stage, I am not writing that off at all.
“I do feel we are a little bit short in certain positions so I will be looking to try and get one or two more to bolster those areas.”
Finally, with a number of former captains joining the side in the summer, questions have been raised over who will wear the armband in 2015/2016.
Teddy says it is far too early for him to be making those kind of decisions, although Ronnie Henry is the front-runner as it stands.
“Early days. We haven’t played a game, not even small sided games yet so I haven’t actually seen what leaders we have got.
"What I do know of Ronnie Henry, I like his character already. He is the club captain so that is how we are at the moment.”
