TEDDY'S SPANISH TRAINING CAMP SUMMARY

22 July 2015

The gaffer gives his take on the trip...

Stevenage FC finished off training camp in Sevilla with a mini-tournament victory against local sides, UD Roteña and CD Utrera after a win and draw in two 45 minute games was enough to top the standings.

A 0-0 draw against Utrera was followed up by a 2-1 win against Roteña, thanks to a goal from a Spanish trialist and Dipo Akinyemi adding to his pre-season tally.

Speaking after the games, Teddy said that he was happy with the outcome.

“I thought both games were very even, a good workout is what we were looking for coming over here. It is very hard to match up two teams from different countries and three teams being here today was even more difficult but a good work out is what we wanted and it is what we got.

“I was just saying to their manager, we didn’t want to win 6-0 and we didn’t want to get beat 6-0 so to have a 0-0 and a 2-1, we are quite happy with that.

“At the end of the day it is another fixture in amongst the ones that we already had. We have come away for this little trip, got to know each other, understand each other and learn how different players function. It was good.”

There were three Spanish trialists from the Sevilla C team lining up for Boro across the two games and late into the second match, one of them was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

“He pulled the fella back two of three times so he can’t really have any complaints with that.

“They have only been in one day so it is not ideal for them but they did OK and it was nice to have a bit of a Spanish feel to our team as well.”

Reflecting on the past four days, which also saw chairman Phil Wallace and Teddy meet Sevilla president Pepe Castro, the manager says that it was a valuable trip.

“Yes, we did a lot of intense training over here. The boys have been complaining about how hard it is has been in the heat. We have picked up one or two injuries that we didn’t really want but hopefully they will be OK by the weekend and if not then, just after.

“I knew that the first sessions when we got over here would be tough, you get the tired legs, the heat gets you and I knew it would be tough.

“The second day was a lot better, they had their legs back, we put them through their paces a bit and we finished off with some shooting sessions to make them feel a bit better about themselves, scoring a lot of goals and I was very impressed.

“It was a good session, we had five or six with me shooting and I was very impressed.

“We will have a little warm down in the morning just to make sure everyone’s OK then we will head back to England and prepare for our next pre-season game.”
