GAVIN THE MAHON FOR THE JOB

Smith adds midfielder to the mix...

Stevenage have completed the loan signing of experienced central midfielder Gavin Mahon from Notts County until the end of the season.

Mahon, 36, brings steel to the Boro midfield and has played 49 times for the Magpies, 15 of those appearances coming this season.

He is most well-known for a 6-year stint with Watford, during which time he made over 200 appearances, including a season in the Premier League after captaining the side to Championship Play off glory, but his career stretches back to the mid-90s.

He began with Wolverhampton Wanderers as a trainee, after leaving Wolves he moved to Hereford United and with two successful seasons under his belt he was snapped up by Brentford for a six-figure fee, another club where he enjoyed his time with over 150 appearances. His real chance came with his next transfer, his move to the Hornets, where he rapidly became a fans’ favourite.

He has since represented QPR and Crystal Palace before joining County in 2011, and manager Gary Smith described himself as ‘delighted’ at the addition.

Speaking to the official website today, Smith said “It’s a really good addition” he continued, “he has lots of experience and comes in at the right time.

“He’s also an individual that has seen and done a lot in the game, and plenty of our guys can lean on him and learn from him because of that. I’m delighted to be able to add him to our squad.”
