STEVENAGE AGREE TERMS WITH RONNIE HENRY, CHRIS WHELPDALE AND SIMON WALTON

30 June 2014

Stevenage have agreed terms with three new players for the 14/15 season.

Returning to the Club is defender Ronnie Henry (pictured above) who made 329 appearances over a seven year period in his first spell at Boro. During that time he won two promotions, two FA Trophies and was the first captain to lift a trophy at the new Wembley Stadium. The 30-year old returns to The Lamex after a two year spell at Luton Town, whom he captained to the Skrill Premier title last season.

Midfielder Chris Whelpdale (pictured below) will join Stevenage from Gillingham. The 27-year old made more than 220 career appearances for the Gills and former club Peterborough United, helping both to promotion to League 1 and the Championship respectively. He’s also shown an eye for goal, scoring over 30 times.

Experienced midfielder Simon Walton (pictured below) arrives at The Lamex Stadium following a two-year spell at Hartlepool United, where he made 73 appearances and scored  four times. The 26-year old began his career at hometown club Leeds United, making 34 appearances and also being capped at England U16-U19 levels. Since leaving Elland Road the midfielder has had spells at Charlton, QPR and Plymouth, as well as loan moves to six others.

Former French under-21 international Bira Dembele has also signed a new deal for 14/15. The defender made 13 appearances last season, scoring once.

When the above signings are completed, manager Graham Westley will have added nine new players to the six senior players retained from last season. More signings are expected in the coming weeks.
