Stevenage centre back, Dean Wells says signing a new contract was a “no-brainer” after enjoying a fantastic thirteen months with the club since joining from Braintree.
Speaking shortly after signing the dotted lines, Wells explained how the extension came about.
“Very pleased to sign, it came out of the blue a bit as I have still got nine months left on this one and when the gaffer called me into his office I thought I could be in trouble here!
“But we were just talking and he mentioned about the club wanting to offer me a new contract and obviously I am over-the-moon to sign. I enjoy it here, the boys are good and really I love everything about it so it was a no-brainer really.
“It gives both me and the club stability, I always wanted to stay so it was like a two second conversation – we shook hands there and then.”
Since joining the club, Wells has played more games and more minutes than any other player.
“I am fairly proud of that. Touch wood but over my whole career I have never really had a serious injury. I had one four years ago where I was out for six weeks but even then there were loads of games called off so I didn’t miss many!
“I am generally quite fit and strong; it is always good to have a 50 game season behind you.”
However, coming into a new season with a new manager always opens the door up for changes as the new management team evaluate the squad. Wells says that he never takes his place for granted.
“When a new manager comes in you never really know where you stand as you have to almost start again and make sure you impress him. When I didn’t start one game in pre-season I did think ‘does he fancy me?’ but I am confident in my own abilities and I have got no divine right to play so I have to earn my shirt.
“The gaffer said to everyone that all the players who are still here from last season are here because he wants them here.”
Ever since joining the club, Wells has been a big favourite with the fans and he says their support never goes unnoticed.
“I think I have a good rapport with the supporters as I am a big football fan myself, as people know.
“I like to give the supporters my time, reply to their messages etc as it is no skin off my back. At the end of the day they get behind us and pay my wages so I am grateful to them.”
