Stevenage held Tottenham Hotspur to a goalless draw in front of a sell-out 6625 crowd at the Lamex Stadium to earn an FA Cup Replay with the North London side.

Gary Smith's men had their chances in either half, but in truth the game could have gone either way and the draw was the fair result.

The club will now travel to White Hart Lane in a bid to progress to the Quarter Finals, but keen eyes will be cast on the draw later this afternoon.

Gary Smith named an unchanged side from the one that won so well at Hillsborough on Tuesday night, meaning that Charles and Beardsley were again favoured as the front two. There was a return to the substitute's bench for Craig Reid, who had been out injured since the FA Cup First Round tie against Hartlepool United.

Harry Redknapp opted for five at the back but named an experienced side that included Carlo Cudicini, Scott Parker, Gareth Bale and Jermain Defoe. It seemed that Danny Rose and Kyle Walker would be the wing backs in the side.

The last time that the two sides had met there were four leagues between them, less than five years since that game and there are just two with Stevenage sitting in the Play off places to shorten that gap further. Amazingly, Boro used 23 different players during that game and just two of those remain in the squad for the FA Cup tie, namely Alan Julian and Ronnie Henry.

On the other side Spurs have absolutely no men still standing from the match in July 2007, notable names from their 2-1 win over the then non-league side include Darren Bent and Adel Taraabt, who both still ply their trade in the Premier League.

The opening twenty minutes produced very little action for the goalkeepers, but Smith's men would have been happy with their contribution to the game. What looked a certain handball was turned down by Phil Dowd in the opening minute and a Byrom corner was headed wide by Beardsley lurking at the back post but Cudicini looked comfortable throughout.

Tottenham's first chance was almost carved out when Younes Kaboul played a delightful long ball for Defoe to chase, the flag stayed down and he was certainly through on goal but it ran through to Day. Despite this Boro were still the side in the ascendancy, and again took the game to Spurs but failed to take advantage of a half clearance. The best opportunity came after a long ball from Roberts that found the chest of Beardsley, he directed it into the path of Charles who progressed into the area but was denied by a brilliant challenge from Michael Dawson.

Perhaps the most clear cut chance of the game so far did go Tottenham's way though and it was Saha who came close; the North London side played the ball around the edge of the box before feeding it through the defence and into the striker's path, he cleverly turned and angled his shot towards the far corner but it trickled wide of the post.

The final quarter of the first half saw Spurs turn up the heat on their Hertfordshire opponents and they looked particularly dangerous when switching the play from right to left. Danny Rose was seeing a lot of the ball and outmuscled Wilson on a couple of occasions in quick succession, his crosses into the box weren't meeting the desired targets though. Minutes later a dangerous free kick was awarded against Henry for a foul on Saha; when it was eventually taken Laird blocked the effort and the clearance was made.

Laird was in the mix at the other end with five minutes of the half remaining though. Freeman was settled into the game and forced a foul on the left wing to give Boro a chance to get the ball into the box. It was curled into the front post and the Stevenage left back met it with a header that sent the ball into orbit, as it looped down it caused trouble though and Cudicini was forced to tip it over the bar for a corner. Byrom whipped the ball in and it eventually came down for a volley at the back post, it was blocked on its way to goal and the Boro players appealed for hand ball but again the referee disagreed.

Another free kick was awarded to the Premier League side when Ashton was adjudged to have fouled Saha, again it looked soft. This time Kaboul was the man over the ball and he tried to strike it across goal but it was comfortably wide of the goal.

As one minute was added for stoppages Bostwick saw a long range pile driver deflect wide for a corner and the ball must have skimmed off of the sweat on Laird's forehead as his movement allowed him a chance at a free header; you could see the frustration on his face but it was a chance that wouldn't have even been there had it been for the work he put in to get into the position.

Spurs came straight out of the traps for the second half and Boro gave Bale too much space in the middle, he used it well and brought the ball forward before firing a shot towards goal - Day managed to push it wide for a corner well and he punched the ball into the box clear too. For the home side the first chance came 6 minutes in when a Charles forced an error from Parker and laid the ball to Bostwick, the central midfielder had memories of Newcastle in his mind but his shot was high and wide of the mark.

Relief was evident on 54 minutes when Spurs found the net, only to be denied by the linesman's flag; the ball was bouncing around in the area and was hit goal wards by Saha, hitting Parker before crossing the line; Dowd had given it and with Roberts and Laird fuming the linesman made a fantastic decision and disallowed it.

There was new life in the Stevenage side, Freeman's trickery was troubling the back line and Charles' strength causing problems. First it was the former Arsenal man who sent a long range effort wide of the mark and next Byrom, whose shot sent Cudicini fumbling across his line but narrowly went over the bar.

Suddenly Boro were pushing Spurs back more and more often, Byrom again showed his shooting ability and the 'keeper could only spill his effort, Beardsley was sniffing for the scraps but Kaboul got in between him and the ball and cleared it; Niko Kranjcar came on for Walker in an attacking move from Redknapp. Minutes later Ben May replaced Beardsley in the Boro attack.

There were twenty minutes of the game left and it was Spurs who were beginning to control things, each side were having periods of possession throughout the game but neither had taken advantage just yet. Don Cowan came on for Charles to add pace to the Boro attack but it was the away side with the next chance as Defoe played Bale down the right hand side; he squared it into the box and Saha tried an audacious back heel that wouldn't have struck any fear into 'keeper Day who collected with ease.

The clock was ticking down and neither side had found the opener, with 87 minutes on the clock Boro's third and final sub was made as Freeman came off for Phil Edwards. Three minutes were added on for stoppages but there were to be no goals at the Lamex and a replay awaits.
