Boro fall to defeat at the County Ground

16 September 2017

Two early goals were too big of a mountain to climb...

After a shaky start, Boro almost came back with goals from Newton and Martin, but unfortunately it wasn't enough as the visitors left the County Ground empty handed.

Darren Sarll made just one change from the team that drew to Crawley in the week. Dale Gorman returned from suspension, replacing Harry Beautyman in the midfield.

Swindon took the lead with their first effort on goal. Chris Hussey whipped in a left-footed corner, and fell to Luke Norris at the back post inside the six yard box. The striker stabbed it home to give the hosts the lead.

Matters were made worse for Stevenage just a few minutes later. Norris was again involved as his squared pass found Keshi Anderson, who had the simple job of tapping in. The worst possible start for Boro, as they now had a mountain to climb if there was anyway back into the game.

Half an hour had passed, and Stevenage were just beginning to settle into the game. Smith and Gorman in the middle of the park were keeping possession, yet without creating any real chances for Godden or Newton to feed off.

Just before half time, Luke Norris was yet again causing trouble for the Boro back four. He collected the ball from deep, before striking from outside the box. His effort came agonisingly close for the home side, as Stevenage were glad to hear the half time whistle.

Stevenage almost started the second half like they started the first. Keshi Anderson was allowed to race through the Boro back four, before crashing the ball against the post. The visitors were fortunate to not be three down.

Five minutes since the restart, Stevenage were back in the game. After brilliant work from Danny Newton down the right flank, he squared it to Matty Godden on the penalty spot. Godden sliced his shot but it luckily hit Newton and hit the back of the net. Not the prettiest of goals but Boro would take it. Game on.

On the hour, Swindon regained their two goal advantage with a Norris penalty. Joe Martin handled in the box and The Robins’ forward would convert to make it two for him this afternoon.

Boro gave themselves a glimmer of hope to take anything away from this game with two minutes left. Joe Martin stood over a free kick on the edge of the box, before placing it in the top right hand corner, very similar to the one he scored vs Cheltenham.

It was too little too late for Stevenage as the visitors succumbed to only their second defeat of the season.

Starting XI: Fryer, Henry, Franks, Toner, Martin, Kennedy, Smith, Gorman, Pett, Newton, Godden.
