PHILLIPS ENJOYING RETURN TO BORO

26 September 2012

Boro Player spoke to Gary Phillips today about how he is settling at Stevenage since joining Gary Smith’s coaching team earlier this year, what he thinks of the goalkeepers at the club and just what a goalkeeping coach does!

When asked how he has found his time back at Stevenage, whom he worked with under Wayne Turner, he responded “I’m thoroughly enjoying it; working with Gary [Smith] and Mark [Newson], we go back a long way, and coming back to a club that I knew reasonably well before has been fantastic.”

Not only has he worked with the club in the past, but also with Gary and Mark at Barnet. He explained that he was manager of the two earlier in their careers and said that it has been easy to create a good relationship again.

“They were my players! I was their manager before so it was slightly different but I had kept tabs on Gary working in America and had come across Mark a few times through coaching. It was lovely when he got the job and I was really pleased for him, it was a bit of a shock when he asked me to come along.

“We’ve gone back a while and went through a lot of adversity at Barnet when we were together, we’re all of a similar age and sense of humour and it works really well. We really enjoy what we’re doing and take it very seriously and we know each other’s characters enough that we can have a little down time as well.”
