SMITH LOOKING FOR IMPROVEMENTS

13 September 2012

Manager Gary Smith spoke to Boro player ahead of the visit of Crewe Alexandra on Saturday and he is anticipating a decent game at the Lamex.

Speaking about his side’s two draws at home this season Gary admitted “We do need to improve our home form.”

He continued “Most teams will count on that to get them into the successful areas of any campaign. It’s very early days but we would like to make sure that at the weekend, and with a home game on Tuesday as well, we start to build a little bit of momentum at home.

“Our away form is really got us into the position that we are in at the moment and the lads realise that. Five games in and there is a lot to be learnt from every game and we are certainly growing with the way that we play at home.”

Over the summer there were personnel changes at Boro however there is something that Smith doesn’t feel has departed, and that’s the spirit. He told us “I think a lot of that spirit and determination that the group have been renowned for has come through in abundance and the weekend was a prime example of going behind and being able to galvanise ourselves and get us back in the game and win.

“That is a serious quality of many of the top teams and most successful teams. On a playing front we are still trying to find the right balance and certainly our rhythm, with a slightly different shape and a lot of new bodies.”

The playing style that he is working towards is clear and already this can be seen on the field, the manager has made no secret of his desire to add more creative players to the side and he is pleased with the way the players have taken to things.

“When you have got creative players on the field, and of course the shape that we have tried to play just recently, it means that there is a more withdrawn striker or attacking midfielder. Robin fulfilled that roll at the weekend but I think it offers Luke [Freeman] and Lucas [Akins] the opportunity to join in and to be more aggressive.”
