PHILLIPS EYES BOUNCEBACK

15 January 2013

Boro Player spoke to Gary Phillips at a snowy training ground today and the goalkeeper coach spoke of his disappointment at Saturday’s home defeat to second in the table Doncaster Rovers, but said that it is important to recover at Bury on Saturday.

Phillips watched the side concede two late goals to miss the opportunity for a victory but he signalled the importance of taking the positives from the display from the side.

Speaking to Player he said, “That’s probably one of the best home performances that we have put in this season and the disappointment was immense after the game. We have to take the positives out of it, there were some really good performances but obviously we didn’t get the second goal which might have made the difference so disappointment is a massive word to say about that game.”

Boro felt aggrieved when a free kick wasn’t awarded late on for what looked like a last ditch foul on Sam Hoskins, which would have certainly been followed by a red card to Jamie McCombe had it been given, but although Gary felt that the decisions may have influenced the final outcome of the tie, he didn’t want to point the finger of blame fully at the officials.

“You look back at them and obviously they played a part but you don’t want to go too far into that. There were one or two decisions which might have changed the course of the game, obviously the one when Sam went through – we felt it was a foul on him and they’ve come straight up the other end and got the equaliser. It was a big decision to make but that’s two weeks running where we have played particularly well, especially away at Crewe. The disappointment is that in the last few minutes of the game again we have conceded.”

Snow has hit much of the country and Stevenage is no exception, speaking about how that could affect the build up to Saturday’s game at Bury Phillips admitted that although it is not ideal “we just get on with it” and revealed that the side will be using Astroturf facilities to ensure that training goes ahead.
