ASHTON ON RETURN TO TRAINING

30 June 2013

Defender 'couldn't wait' to get back...

Stevenage central defender Jon Ashton returned to the training field as the club took a pre-season trip to La Manga and before boarding the flight home today, the 30-year old spoke to Boro Player.

Ashton was hit with two injuries last season that ruled him out for much of the campaign; whilst he was in the side Boro remained unbeaten and although it is a team game the contribution of the commanding centre half played a big part in the solid start to the year.

On the subject of returning from injury, Ashton told us, “During the off-season I couldn’t wait for this day, coming back to training, last season was very disappointing for myself. Having played such a small prt in the season and it was so frustrating with the resukts and the league position, but I’m near enough back to full training now.

“There is still a long way to go yet though, I just need to be ready for the start of the season, but I’m positive that I’ll be there and I can’t wait.”

Speaking about the trip itself Ashton began, “It’s always nice to get away in pre-season, get a bit of sun on your backs! Obviously there have been a few new additions to the squad this summer so it’s always nice to get away and help the team morale and team spirit – I think it has been very worthwhile.

“[The new signings have settled in] very well, we had a little meeting last night, just to summarise the whole trip, and the boys sat down and we were talking about how they have all settled in well, all had something to say and brought something new to the party.”

He continued, “I think we’ll be in a much better place now, having been away for a week. It’s been good.”
