And a message to the fans...
Boro Player spoke to winger Lucas Akins ahead of the midweek fixture with Brentford at the Lamex Stadium, and he feels that the players must take blame for the current run in form.
Speaking on Monday afternoon at a sunny training ground, Lucas reflected on the defeat on Saturday, saying, “It was very disappointing because it was a massive game for us. Every game is massive for us. We just want to get a bit of momentum going forward and it was disappointing how the game panned out and the result, being at home, the players definitely have to take responsibility for that.”
He continued, “We are doing all we can, certainly on the training field, the Gaffer is giving us instructions and obviously we’re not going out there and performing so it is down to us as players to get it right out there and show the confidence that we have been showing on the training pitch and take that into games.”
Akins has spent the last two seasons with Tranmere Rovers who twice spent a period in the relegation zone but finished with their League One status intact. He told us that he feels that experience will put him in good stead for the run-in and that he feels the side will be able to steer clear of a relegation battle.
“The last couple of seasons I have been in two worse situations in the relegation zone and we managed to turn it around and had a very strong finish. I’m sort of experienced in that sense and I know it is so minute, luck can change quite quickly but you’ve got to make your own luck and we need to start doing that by putting in a complete performance.
“We’re very lucky in the sense that the manager has given us a lot of chances being in the team and we are lucky to have him and the coaching staff who have been positive and fantastic about it. We’ve shown earlier on in the season what we can do and we will get back to that, hopefully ASAP because we want a strong finish to the season.”
After discussing the recent form, the advantage of having played Brentford quite recently and his thoughts on training this morning he concluded the interview with a message to the fans.
“You’ve been great for us all season, I know we’re going through a bit of a difficult patch at the moment but that’s when we need you the most. I hope you carry on supporting us like you have been fantastic all season, we honestly and genuinely mean that because they have been great. If they can get down and support us then hopefully we can give them something to cheer about and inspire them, and they can inspire us.”
