Stevenage were beaten at Prenton Park and would travel home regretting a sloppy spell in the first half which cost them the game.
All four goals came before half time, Luke Freeman's free kick cancelling out Zoumana Bakayogo's opener before Ben Gibson and a second for Bakayogo sealed the fate.
Led by Jon Ashton and Darren Sarll on the touch line, Stevenage looked creative and attacking and on another day could well have secured a positive result.
Boro fell behind with less than ten minutes on the clock, the defence failed to deal with a looping cross into the area which had the wind to thank for its awkwardness. Arnold was caught under it and with pressure on him he spilled it, Akpa Akpro pounced and his blocked shot fell to Bakayogo who fired home from close range.
The response was just what Roberts would have wanted, less then a minute later the scores were level. Freeman had his name on the scoresheet with a free kick that curled over the wall and inside the near post.
The home side were pressing and still Stevenage found it difficult to cope with crosses into the area; Gibson hit a shot wide of the mark and Akpa Akpro's header was on target but well-saved before the game's third goal finally came.
Gibson made up for his earlier miss by putting Rovers ahead with a low shot into the bottom corner and his side extended their lead before the interval.
Bakayogo had his second of the afternoon, jumping on a mix up between Arnold and David Gray and nipping between the two to steal possession before slotting it into the back of the net.
Boro had chances to score another before the half time; Lopez looked lively and his first touch was superb whilst Shroot, Akins and in particular Freeman were all positive going forward.
Into the second half and Stevenage pushed, chances were created but Fon Williams was largely untested with little hitting the target. At the other end Arnold was untroubled in the second period, a sign of Boro's dominance.
Shroot had the most glorious chance of all but couldn't net from close range, whilst Hoskins hit an effort into the side netting but it wasn't Stevenage's day.
