Stevenage got off to a quick start and Luke Freeman looked as lively as ever; after picking up the ball on the half-way line he drove through the heart of the Wolves midfield and after a one-two between himself and Akins, he fired over the target.
Wolves were forced to make an early sub as Henry came off for Dicko on 11 minutes and neither team threatened much within the opening 20. Freeman and Zoko had a few exchanges in attack that, at another time might have resulted in a clear goal scoring chance, but the Wolves defence did a good job in restricting the opportunities.
Wolves found most joy down the left-hand side, with Jacobs and Golbourne finding acres of space. Wolves never truly tested the Boro defence until 29 minutes in when Clarke missed from close-range. From the left, Dicko smashed the ball from a narrow angle at goal and Day parried towards Clarke, who couldn’t adjust in time and his header went wide.
Five minutes before half-time, Boro almost nicked a goal after Smith's corner was flicked towards goal by McDonald and Ikeme had to pull off a brilliant save to push it out for a corner.
Boro came out well at half-time and forced the first effort on goal; Freeman cutting in from the right and firing over from the edge of the area.
The second half really kicked into life and both teams were creating better chances than they had in the entire first half.
A mistake from Jon Ashton almost allowed Edwards in on goal, but Heslop recovered well to usher the defender away from goal before clearing the danger.
Boro’s best opportunities of the game fell to Smith, both times with efforts from over the shoulder. The first time, Akins flicked on a long ball into space for Smith and Ikeme made a fantastic reaction save. Not long after, he whistled another effort over the bar from Zoko's assist.
Chris Day may have been Boro’s star man in the second half though as he kept Boro at 0-0 with a couple of outstanding saves. On 60 minutes Dicko, who was causing havoc in the Boro defence was kept out at a narrow angle from the legs of Day. The best was yet to come though as 70 minutes in, Jacobs played Clarke through on goal but Day was quick down to his right to deny the striker.
4 minutes of added time were announced and aside from Evans smashing it over from a knock-down off a deep free-kick, Boro negotiated it comfortably and it ended 0-0.
