PETT POSITIVE AHEAD OF CHRISTMAS GAMES

23 December 2015

Tom Pett says that despite not winning all three points against Accrington last Saturday, he and his teammates are staying confident ahead of a busy Christmas schedule.

Boro had the lead for almost 84 minutes but a late Accrington penalty denied Stevenage a fourth straight win.

“It was always going to be tough, they are high in the league for a reason. We knew they were going to come here and try and play football and it was tough, the pitch was quite heavy as well which didn’t make it easy for them or us but I think we battled well and definitely deserved the point, probably deserved all three.

“We will take the positives though; it is still a point against a team in the top five before today.”

Accrington have been one of the strongest teams away from home this season but struggled to play their usual game, particularly in the first half as Boro disrupted the opposition.

Pett says that the teams game plan worked perfectly.

“We knew they were going to play out from the back, we pressed high and squeezed them from goal kicks and when the goalkeeper got it. I think that showed because of how long ball they went so it was a credit to ourselves for putting our plan into practice.

“We haven’t seen it back yet but if it is handball, it is handball. Still think it is a little bit harsh but it doesn’t take anything away from our performance. It was still a positive performance and we are still positive in there – we are not going to get deflated over it.”

Next up for Boro is Crawley away on Boxing Day and Dagenham at home on the 28th as the team look to continue their unbeaten run of six games in the league.

“We have got a good togetherness, we know our game plan now and we know how to win games which is good so we have got to take that into the Christmas period, get a couple of wins and start looking up the table.

“We have got to be professional. The gaffer has spoken about it a little bit but I think we all know – no drinking, got to eat sensible and I think we are in Christmas day but it is a Saturday and a Monday game so we have got to prepare properly.

“Last year we prepared properly and I think we got 6 points over the Christmas period so we will be looking to do the same.”
