Boro out of the Herts Senior Cup after thrilling quarter-final

Stevenage's quest for the Herts Senior Cup is over for another season after a 5-3 defeat to Boreham Wood at The Lamex Stadium this evening.

A mixed Boro side featuring Calvin Zola, squad players, recently returned loanees and a number of U18s looked bright in spells but Conference South league leaders and current HSC holders Wood were well drilled and proved devastatingly clinical on the night.

Jo N'Guessan gave Stevenage a 10th minute lead with an angled shot past James Rusell but parity was restored just two minutes later through a superb solo effort by the league's top scorer Lee Angol, who ran through the Boro defence and dinked the ball home over Sam Beasant.

Matthew Wichelow then struck twice in five minutes - one a curling effort and the other a superb volley - to put Wood 3-1 up by the 20 minute mark, only for Okenabirhie to pull one back on the half hour from close range after Zola had been played through and rattled the bar.

The second half proved just as eventful with Okenabirhie calmly slotting home his second and Boro's third on 53 minutes to make things level and Zola then letting flying from distance but being superbly denied by the diving Russell.

In three minutes of chaos around the hour-mark Angol diverted home his second, Deacon hit the woodwork at the other end and then Wood won a penalty after a foul by George Casey. Sam Beasant superbly denied Angol his hat-trick with a fine low save to his right, but the Luton Town loanee wasn't to be denied his treble, superbly volleying home into the top corner on 70 minutes after being given far too much time and space inside the box.

Dembele saw a header bounce off the top of the bar and Russell somehow turned Okenabirhie's goalbound header over the bar as Boro pushed for more goals in the closing stages, without success.

Boreham Wood progress and will hope that retaining the Herts Senior Cup will be a double, with promotion to the Conference Premier a real possibility on this showing. Meanwhile whilst a useful exercise to give Zola some match fitness and others some game time, attention now turns for Stevenage to their upcoming trip to York this weekend in Sky Bet League 2.
