Teddy Sheringham says that his first game in charge went as well as it could have done as Stevenage beat Wealdstone 1-0 in the first pre-season friendly of the summer.
The new boss had plenty to reflect upon as 23 players made it onto the pitch, with a strong first XI taking part for the duration of the first half.
“I toyed with the idea of putting a couple of trialists into the team to help them along but I don’t know enough about any of the players at the moment, so I thought to myself I would try and play a strong team first of all and try to get the best out of them.
“Especially the players that have been working with us for the last 4 or 5 days and all the running that I know they have done.
“I don’t really know where the youngsters are at the moment but I thought they did just as well, in a different way than the first team so I was really pleased with that.”
Teddy says that despite needing some fine-tuning and the team being a long way ready, the ideas he has been trying to teach in training over the last week appears to be coming off.
“I am always learning (about the players). We have had the balls out for 4 or 5 days now, working on things and the way the players tried to implement that today I was very encouraged.”
