SCHUMACHER: WE GOT PUNISHED

24 October 2015

Steven Schumacher bemoaned not killing off Northampton today after only taking a 1-0 score line into the break at half-time.

Northampton scored twice in the second half to take a 2-1 lead and there was no comeback from Boro this time around.

“I thought we played really well first half, controlled the game but didn’t take our chances that we created and got punished.

“It is not the first time this season that we have played really well in the first half and created chances (that we haven’t taken). We have done that a couple of times and we go in at half-time and we say, ‘look we are going to get punished unless we keep the clean sheet’ and unfortunately we can’t do that at the moment, we are struggling to keep clean sheets."

Both Northampton goals were sloppy from Boro’s point of view and Schumacher says the team need to be better at both ends of the pitch.

“We are fuming over both goals; they are poor goals to concede. We keep looking at our defenders but at the end of the day we should be 3-0 up and cruising and they should be out of the game.

“It is about both boxes, the gaffer says it all the time. At any level of football it is about both boxes but especially at this level. Whichever team dominates the two 18 yard boxes wins games and at the minute we aren’t dominating either end.”

Neither team created a huge amount of chances in the second half, Northampton being the more clinical when the opportunities came and Schumacher says that he understands the fans frustrations.

“Our fans must be so frustrated watching us; they must see two different teams.

“If I was a fan I would pull my hair out watching us but we have got to take confidence from it. We can’t get down on ourselves because we have got some good players, we do some good things but we just do some poor things as well.”
