HUGHES: CONFIDENCE IS HIGH

11 September 2015

Centre-back Mark Hughes says that the Stevenage squad is working as hard as ever to build on the recent good run of form.

“The mood the last few weeks has been excellent but we are still working just as hard, probably even harder because we know we can do a lot better.

“Confidence is high and people are coming back from injuries; competition for places is a big thing so everyone has got to be on their game.”

Our most common centre-back pairing this season has seen Dean Wells play alongside Mark Hughes and Hughes says it is a partnership that works.

“We have sort of struck it off; he is a player that I enjoy playing with. He gives as good as what he can no matter what happens and I am pretty much the same.

“It is not just us though; it is the people in front as well. As a team I think the last couple of weeks we have worked really hard to stop the balls coming in which makes our job easier. It has been good.”

Hughes, an experienced player in the Football League has come up against Saturday’s opponent, York City many times and he says they have always been a difficult team to beat.

“Every time I have played against them they have always been a strong, robust team. They all seem to know their jobs, they are a hardworking team, very hardworking and they will be a tough team.

“I can remember last year when I played them they were very dangerous from set pieces; they have three or four really big lads and they will be whole-hearted. They will give their all for the manager and will be a tough nut to crack.”
