Stevenage striker, Matt Godden says Thursday night’s friendly against Watford was a good test for the team and that his first experience playing at the Lamex Stadium was a positive one.

Boro were forced to defend manfully against such high calibre opposition and performed well despite losing 2-0.

“Yeah it was a massive step up. They are a class Premier League outfit, you saw from their finish last year. They are a big, powerful side so it was a good test for us.

“It is all about getting minutes under your belt, getting that sharpness under your belt ready for August 6th when Crewe comes to town.

“I really enjoyed it, it is nice to come and see the stadium for the first time – I had not seen it yet! It is nice and compact and yeah, I enjoyed myself out there tonight.”

Next for Boro this pre-season is a trip to Bishop Stortford on Saturday and Godden says that facing such contrasting opposition is beneficial to the team.

“It will be completely different to this. Watford obviously move the ball around very, very well and they worked us in different areas of the game that Bishop Stortford will work us in. But again, it is another chance to get more minutes under the belt, push on and then we are two, three weeks form the first game of the season.”

Having now been together for just under a month, Godden says that the team are progressing well with the season only weeks away.

“Very good from what I have seen in the first three weeks. We are all very together; we are all pulling in the same direction so I can’t why it won’t be a successful season.”
