SARLL LOOKING FORWARD TO WATFORD CHALLENGE

13 July 2016

Stevenage First Team Manager, Darren Sarll has spoken about how he has signed three very different strikers this summer as preparations for the pre-season visit of Watford get underway.

Despite being delighted with the additions, Sarll still says that he would like to sign another attacking player before the transfer window closes.

“Rowan is very different to Matt Godden - he has got that long stride, he eats ground up very quickly and has good movement in-behind. Matty is a bit of a scuttler - he sort of flies across here, there and everywhere whereas Jake is like the linker of the three - he wants to link play up and bring others in.

“I think we have a nice dynamic there and maybe one more addition in an attacking position, not just centre-forward, would set us in good stead for the rest of the season.

“We have got to make sure we bring in the right people first, people that can step up to the challenge ahead which is a big challenge. It is a really important year for us to re-establish what Stevenage is as a team in League Two. We won’t be in a rush, we will make sure we get the right person and right fit for us.”

After beating St Albans 3-2 on Saturday, Sarll says the totally different challenge of Watford will enable the team to work on different aspects on their game.

“It is a completely different test for us and when we are playing in pre-season, it is why we structure it that way.

“You look at St Albans and should logic prevail, we should have had 90 minutes of possession really but it didn’t work like that. St Albans were excellent first half but we had a lot of the ball second half and it means we can structure our week around the type of game we are hoping to play on Thursday.

“It will be nice to get back out and play against Watford where like so many times last year, we will have to dip deep and maybe not have as much possession of the ball but be really resolute, show our togetherness, our strength, our fitness and try bring on our pressing game as much as possible.”

“It being a totally different test at the other end of the scale is a pleasant change for us to the work we have done so far.”
