SCHUMACHER: IT WAS A GREAT TEAM EFFORT

27 November 2016

Having made his first start of 2016/2017 last week at Accrington, Steven Schumacher is now 2 for 2 in games he has started this season as he helped Boro to a 2-1 win at Fratton Park on Saturday.

A long term ACL injury meant that Schumacher was out for over 10 months but that is all behind him now as he begins to re-establish his place in the side.

“Last week was a really good result and an important one but this one just about tops it.

“It was a great team effort and it has to be to come and win here. Portsmouth are a really good side. They are really expansive, they make the pitch big so you have to put a shift in to get any result here.

“We thought we could come here and get a good result and we are really pleased to come away with three points.“

Despite a below par first half, Stevenage were able to push on in the second as goals from Schumacher and Godden made the difference.

Smith pulled one back for Pompey with ten minutes to go but aside from a late flurry in added time, Boro saw out the game comfortably.

“That was the brief during the week. We said that at minimum we need to be nil nil at half-time and stay in the game. Potsmouth had a couple of half chances in that period because we didn’t start great to be honest.

“We went in at half-time and we were confident. We said that if we sorted a few little things out, we were confident we would get a chance.

“With Matty Godden in the form that he is in, anything that falls for him you fancy him to get a goal. Luckily I got one as well and it wasn’t the greatest goal I have scored but it definitely felt the best after what has gone on.”

In somewhat bizarre circumstances, Schumacher's goal was his final action of the day as he was substituted immediately after scoring.

“I knew I was coming off. I knew it was going to be by number. When we got the throw in, I kind of just sneaked towards the 18 yard box to get a bit further away.

“Then the lad has thrown it onto the pitch and I thought ‘hang on, this could be your last touch here’, so I made my way into the box and luckily it fell for me and went in!”
