The boss weighs in on Smith signing...

Darren Sarll says he has finally got his man as Jonathan Smith signed for the club earlier on Monday.

Smith becomes Sarll's newest arrival and believes he will be worth the wait.

“Jonathan is exactly the profile of player I have been patiently looking for.

"He has experience, winning experience and both the technical and combative traits for the role that we would like.

"He is a terrific signing for us and will help support the young talent in this area of the pitch that we already have.

“His arrival and effect will be immediate and I am delighted to have acquired him."

Although Sarll wants a younger squad for 2017/2018, he admits that experience is vital and recent signings have helped in that aspect.

"Within the last two signing we have added Chris Whelpdale and now Jonathan. Two experienced players who fit the bill perfectly for what we want. They definitely strengthen us.

"We want to be a young, dynamic side but we also want to be balanced. Jonathan and Chris go a long way in helping us do that.

"He is an old fashioned midfield player - he can do a lot of things well. He brings a lot of skills to us but most importantly, he brings a pair of eyes and a winning mindset, which is key to delveoping our young players but also a winning culture at the club."

Finally, Sarll touched on tomorrow's Carabao Cup tie at Millwall which he says will see a full strength Stevenage team take to the pitch.

"It is very similair to going to Ipswich last year. We always seem to pick out difficult away trips against good sides in this competition and I have every respect for the work Neil Harris has done.

"We retained our pre-season friendly because of Neil's relationship with myself but tomorrow will be a totally different challenge with there being something to play for. We will wait and see what sort of side they play but we will be as strong as possible."
