We look ahead to the U18s season opener...

This weekend sees the scholars start their Youth Alliance campaign away to Gillingham.

Following the most successful league campaign by a Stevenage Youth team - which saw a record amount of goals scored and conceded - we caught up with U18s Head Coach Jorden Gibson.

Gibson said that the squad have had a “very good week", playing against the First Team a couple of times, whilst also fitting in plenty of their own work in the build up to Saturday.

The team will be without Ben Wilmot who suffered a head injury during the pre-season draw against Biggleswade Town, but there is good news on goalkeeping duo, Captain Ryan Schmid and Harry Payne.

“Ben Wilmot will be out and he probably won't play next week either which is a big loss. We should be able to feature Harry Payne and Ryan Schmid though, who have both been working hard on their respective recoveries. Everyone else is fit and healthy."

Following four goals in two games, Gibson is backing Andronicos Georgiou to continue his good run of form.

“He is playing in a relatively new position but is in a good place at the moment. Andron has trained brilliantly this week and when a player has a good week in training, there is a very good chance that they will take that into the game on Saturday.

"When we have a happy Andronicos, he can lift the spirit and performance of the team.”

Finally, Jorden believes that his youngsters have a great chance of starting the season with a bang.

"If the players buy into what they have been coached and don’t get over excited with it being the first game, we will have a good chance of getting a result."
