MCANUFF: IT WAS A LOVELY BONUS TO SEE THE BALL GO IN

28 January 2017

Jobi McAnuff was over the moon to mark his return to the Stevenage starting line-up with three points and a goal as Boro came out 2-0 winners at home to Grimsby.

Although his last start was in the reverse fixture back in September, McAnuff says he was ready for the opportunity.

“It has been a long time coming, for various reasons. Obviously I picked up a broken toe earlier in the season which was frustrating and then I have found it hard to get back in the team.

“I have just been plugging away, trying to keep myself ticking over really, ready for when the opportunity came.

“I am just glad to have contributed to a win, first and foremost which was very important for us today to get back on track and obviously it was a lovely bonus to see the ball go in.”

McAnuff’s goal effectively decided the game as he showed great composure to capitalise on a defensive error, chipping the ball over the back-tracking defenders into the net.

“It is one of them where you just try and judge it right. It was lovely to see it drop in and it wasn’t a bad one but unfortunately for me, Schuey has probably scored a better one today!

“It has been a frustrating week because we couldn’t actually get on the pitch as much because of the weather but I thought the boys made the best of the situation. I thought we looked in good nick, looked strong, energetic and it was a good win.

“We were very solid today and with what we have got going forward, we will score goals for sure.”

Despite not being on the pitch much this season, McAnuff says he is delighted to be back and spoke about the role he and other senior lads have played behind the scenes.

“I was very fortunate when I was as coming through to have some really good solid senior pros who really helped me.

“It is something I have always tried to do with the younger lads. We have got some really talented boys here and as you get older, part of your job is to help bring those guys through and give them a bit of an advice.

“It is probably the work that a lot of people away from the ground don’t see.

“From our point of view it is just great to be able to contribute when you are not playing, although it is frustrating and obviously great to be out there.”
