The boss offers his thoughts on the return of Whelpdale...

Darren Sarll says he is delighted to bring Chris Whelpdale back to the club and believes the winger will be an excellent addition to his 2017/2018 squad.

“It is a really good signing for us at this time of year. He is a League One quality player and since he has left us, he hasn’t played too much football so we are delighted to jump on that and reacquire him.

“We have wanted to sign players with experience, we have wanted to sign winners and Chris ticks all those boxes.”

Whelpdale scored 16 goals across two seasons with Boro and Sarll says he is in good shape to pick up where he left off.

“Chris just needs to retain fitness. At this moment in time he is in a really good place physically and he will just need a bit of managing, but we know that when fit, he is an excellent player at this level.

“He was terrific for us during his time at the club previously so everybody knows the quality he will bring. His aerial prowess, his goals and his athleticism will be magnificent for us.

“He is happy, he sees Stevenage as home and I think we will get the best out of him”
